Grant County Prosecutor, Angus Lee wants the legislature to change the State law that restores gun rights to the mentally ill who have been involuntarily committed. Steve Hair reports . .
Lee says current law makes it too easy for those with serious mental health care problems to obtain guns. Lee says the law should be changed to include a 12 month waiting period before a mentally ill person released from court-ordered confinement can own a gun. He also would raise the standard used by the courts to determine the danger that person poses to the public. Lee has outlined his recommendations in a letter to 13th District House Representatives, Matt Manweller and Judy Warnick. He says he's proposing additional legislation that would stiffen sentences for those who misuse firearms.
