U.S. Forest Service officials say last September's Goat Fire near Pateros was human caused. Investigators say the near 74-hundred acre blaze was caused by people shooting at exploding targets three miles southwest of the town. Burning primarily on National Forest land, the fire also spread into adjacent property of the Bureau of Land Management and other private lands under the State Department of Natural Resources protection. The fire was declared controlled on November 9th. No one has been charged yet. The investigation is ongoing.
