An elderly couple, visiting from the Netherlands, were found safe and sound Thursday afternoon after being reported missing Wednesday. John Wisemore with the Chelan County Sheriffs office says the couple left the Obertall Inn in Leavenworth around ten a.m., heading to Peshastin on a sightseeing drive. There were expected back by two p.m., but never showed up. Wisemore says searchers spotted the couple's car in the Mills Canyon area, up the Entiat drainage, around one p.m. and found the couple shortly afterwards. Wisemore says Jan Mulders and Bertha Imelman, ages 82 and 81, told officials they had suffered the flat tire Wednesday night, then ran out of gas. Imelman says they spent the night in the car, and began walking out to seek help at about eight a.m. Thursday morning. Wisemore says Mulders and Imelman had only one bottle of water to share, no food and no cellular phone. The Sheriff's office says anyone considering a trip into the backcountry areas to be prepared for a potential overnight stay. Always have a cell phone with a fully charged battery, plenty of food and water and basic survival gear in your vehicle.
