10/24/11 Polio Day

Monday is World Polio Awareness Day and Rotary Club International wants to use the occasion as a reminder of how close we are to eradicating the disease that sickened millions of people around the world.

For the most part in the United States the images of crippled children, March of Dimes posters, and iron lungs that were used to help polio victims breath are distant memories. But Rotarians such as Jim Adamson says ridding the world of the disease means constantly re-educating people about the disease and the consequences of not vaccinating against it.

An exhibit featuring one of the old iron lungs was on display over the weekend. Adamson says it was interesting to see the lung because its what U.S. used to use it , yet other countries still utilize it today.  Adamson says the club's job is to raise money to immunize people all over the world.

Adamson advises everyone to donate money as well as immunize your own children from polio.

The World Polio Day ceremony kicks off at 5 pm at Centeniel Park on Wenatchee Avenue.

Sunrise Rotary Club Member, Jim Adamson says the organization has invited several polio survivors to also come to the event to share their experiences.
