11/17/11 WHS Drowning

Wenatchee School District officials says a ninth grade student at Wenatchee High died Thursday in what police believe was an accidental drowning. In a news release, Wenatchee Police Sergeant John Kruse says 14 year old Antonio Reyes was found unresponsive at the bottom of the high school swimming pool about 10-50 a.m. Police say Reyes had been in the pool with classmates in a swimming class that was scheduled between 9-13am and 10-09am.   Kruse says investigators interviewed classmates and teachers and determined the teen likely drowned while in class though his classmates and teacher was unaware of this occurring. Reyes was found by students of the next scheduled swimming class. He was pulled out of the pool and teachers performed CPR on him until emergency medical service workers arrived. Hospital officials say Antonio passed away around two p.m. Thursday. School officials say community and school counselors worked with students Thursday and will be available Friday.
