YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - Yakima police say they have captured the fugitive who failed to return from a furlough to see his dying mother.
The Yakima Herald reports Jacob Lucey was recaptured without incident a Yakima residence, ending a three-day manhunt.
Capt. Rod Light says the dying mother story was a ruse. Light says the mother, Linda Cook, is fine.
Cook, however, told the paper she's dying from degenerative arthritis and terminal cancer.
The 29-year-old Lucey had been missing since Nov. 1, when he failed to return from a 24-hour furlough from jail while awaiting sentencing on car theft charges.
The decision to furlough Lucey has infuriated police, who did not learn of his release until Tuesday. That's when detectives linked him to an armed carjacking over the weekend.
