Burn bans go into effect in Central Washington this weekend. Officials with the State Department of Ecology are calling for the bans in Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, Ferry and Stevens counties. Residents in those five counties are asked to stop all outdoor burning and the unnecessary use of fireplaces and uncertified wood stoves, starting Saturday. An air stagnation advisory is in effect through Monday night, and DOE officials say the ban will remain in place until at least Tuesday morning. Cold, still air traps smoke, which can cause serious health problems for some, close to the ground where people can easily breathe it.
