The crush is on at wineries in north central Washington. Like many other crops in the state, grapes were a little late this year, but the harvest is under way in areas such as the Lake Chelan viticultural area - a region recognized for unique climate and soil that distinguish wines. Linda Simpson with the Washington Field office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service says some growers in our state suffered from last Fall's freeze. The crop is estimated to be down about 15 percent from last year's record of 160 thousand tons of grapes. Washington is the number 2 wine producer in the United States, behind California.
