Apple growers in North Central Washington are finding the pickings pretty slim with regards to the number of farmhands available to harvest this year's fruit crop. Kirk Mayer with Washington Growers Clearinghouse attributes the labor shortage to the later than normal harvest. The harvest is at peak right now and growers are desperate to get the apples off the trees. Mayer says a skilled apple picker can make good money. WorkSource in Wenatchee is coordinating a recruitment effort for orchard laborers. The work is expected to extend into mid-November. WorkSource officials encourages those interested in applying for work to call 665-3710 or 665-3728.
