10/19/11 Gang Family Charges

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - The mother in a Yakima gang family was sentenced Tuesday to 11 years in prison for giving a loaded gun and drugs to her 15-year-old son to hide.

Yakima Herald-Republic reports 34-year-old Jennifer N. Rodriguez was convicted of delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors say Rodriguez and her husband Daniel Rodriguez, a gang member known as Smurf, were involved in a drug rip-off in January at an apartment complex. Police caught their 15-year-old son trying to flee out the back with a loaded pistol and a bottle of painkillers.

The 30-year-old Daniel Rodriguez was convicted on a firearms charge for his role and sentenced to five years in prison. The son was convicted as a juvenile and sentenced to 29 days in detention.
