10/23/11 Orchard Shooting

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - Authorities in Yakima County say a 72-year-old apparently upset with farmworkers in a nearby orchard shot at them from his home and injured a tractor operator.

Sheriff's Sgt. John Durand says the 59-year-old worker was shot in the face and neck Saturday afternoon in a semi-rural area east of Yakima. The worker, who is Hispanic, was taken to Yakima Regional Medical Center with injuries that weren't life-threatening.

Durand says the suspected shooter as a while man from Konnowac Pass, but did not release his name. The Yakima Herald-Republic reports police did not rule out racial motivation for the shooting.

Durand says the suspect voluntarily gave himself to deputies in his home. He was expected to be booked into jail on investigation of first-degree assault and attempted assault.
