The Entiat Ranger District Monday closed all district campgrounds and the four main trails in the Upper Mad River area. Natural Resource Specialist for the District, Randy McLandress says the area closes every year for resource protection, because the trails turn to mud as the fall weather sets in. The area will reopen to recreational use in mid-July when the trail systems dry out. The campgrounds will be reopened in the spring, as the weather permits.
On a related note, visitors to the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forests are reminded to start preparing for winter weather conditions. Spokeswoman Robin DeMario says it's important to check the local weather forecast before heading off into the woods. Because conditions can change quickly, DeMario says it's a good idea to keep vehicles stocked with simple emergency equipment. Items such as tire chains, extra warm clothes, blankets, water and extra food.
