SEATTLE (AP) - A University of Washington grad student is researching eating habits by examining the food people throw away in Seattle trash bins.
David Giles is working on his doctoral thesis in anthropology by Dumpster-diving.
The Seattle Times reports the 31-year-old native of Australia hopes to raise awareness of the volume of edible food that gets thrown out.
Giles finds plenty of food that he eats himself and says there's a counter-culture group that regularly scrounges groceries from garbage.
The philosophical question is, "What makes a thing valuable, and suddenly not valuable?"
