This years' apple harvest appears to be smaller in volume than first forecast. The 107-million cartons predicted prior to harvest has now been down-sized to about 101-million cartons of fruit.
A late harvest and a shortage of apple pickers has added a short-term stress to the final weeks of the Washington apple harvest. Add to that a recent cold snap and industry officials say they probably won't know for sure how many apples will make the trip to the packer this year.
Todd Fryhover with the Washington State Apple Commission says mother nature hasn't been much help. He says while the late harvest freeze and rain will have an impact. he remains upbeat about the overall quality of the crop.
Fryhover says the industry will have a better read on the harvest volume when the next storage report comes out December 1st.
The bottom line according to Fryhover is that demand remains strong for Washington Apples on both the domestic and export fronts.
