A federal bi-partisan bill eliminating unfair competition with businesses out of state was introduced in the Senate today and it could generate 483-million dollars for Washington State over the next three years.
The Washington State Department of Revenue says 306.5-million would go toward the state's general fund with 176-million dollars heading to local government.
Mike Gowrylow of the Department of Revenue specifies remits sales taxes from out of state businesses back to where the purchase was made. "Many people will see something in a store...then go online to buy it in order to avoid the tax," Gowrylow said.
Also known as the Marketplace Fairness Act...the bill would require out-of-state companies with more than 500-thousand dollars a year in sales to collect and remit sales tax to customers in all states.
The department says the state currently collects sales tax on approximately half of online and mail order purchases.
