Wenatchee mayor Dennis Johnson's preliminary budget is balanced, but still needs more work. A prior budget proposal was balanced, in part by making staff reductions including three police officers and one police clerk. That's been added back in part by making cuts elsewhere, increasing the city's utility tax by one percent, increasing property taxes by one percent and reducing the city's reserve fund to a little over 11 and a half percent. Councilman Mark Kulaas says he appreciates the hard work the Mayor and city staff have put into the budget, but there are still some concerns. One is the reserve fund, which in the past has been set at 14 percent. The council will take up the budget again at their next meeting. The budget is set to be adopted at the council's December 1st meeting.
