11/11/11 Car Tabs Back on the Table?

Wenatchee city council members are taking another look at car tabs. Mayor Dennis Johnson says in prior meetings, some on the council expressed a desire to have an advisory vote on the issue before taking action. Under state law the council can impose a 20 dollar car tab fee, to fund transportation issues, without a public vote. Councilman Mark Kulaas Thursday night asked the mayor to bring the issue to the forefront once again. He says with the city putting off important street preservation work because of a tight budget, he wants to explore the option in depth once again.  Kulaas says prior public meetings on the issue were sparsely attended, so he's hoping for a good turnout at next Thursday's council meeting. If the council adopts a 20 dollar car tab fee, it wouldn't go into effect until the middle of next year. It's estimated the fee would net the city 250 thousand dollars in 2012.
