Last night's (Monday) Eastmont School District board meeting surfaced opinions on what to cut when the "legislative axe" comes down on the education budget statewide.
School Districts statewide are anticipating 500 million dollars slash in funds come the legislative special session which started yesterday (Monday).
It was a short discussion amongst Eastmont board members who discussed the option of either cutting levy equaliztion or cut the school year by four days.
School Board President Chris Gibbs, "Cutting the L.E.A. would be devastating, we need to explore all the options."
Eastmont Superintendent Garn Christiansen says cutting the levy would eliminate over 2.7-million dollars from the district's annual budget.
Board member Annette Eggers agreed with Gibbs, "I think four or five days of school yes, without contact would be difficult, but looking at the big picture it would be less impactful than 2.7 million."
It didn't take long for members to unanimously decide that reducing the school year by four or five days could be the best option moving forward.
Discussion regarding days to cut included the two and a half days before Thanksgiving...not making up snow days or other choice dates within the school year.
The School Board plans to adopt a resolution regarding what to cut at the next meeting.
That resolution would be presented to the legislature by the end of this year.
