12/03/11 Everett Schools and Juice Concerns

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - Everett elementary schools have stopped serving apple and grape juice because of health concerns.

The school district told KOMO radio on Friday that concerns about arsenic levels in those juices prompted the decision.

The concerns have been raised by the Food and Drug Administration, which is stepping up testing for arsenic and lead in apple juice and grape juice.

The food and nutrition manager for the district, Debbie Webber, says she asked the lunch room managers at all of the district's elementary schools to stop serving the juices until they know more. For now, they will be replaced with other juices, as well as water, milk and fresh fruit.

The juice change does not affect middle or high schools.
