12/05/11 Drowning Victim's Family Files Claim (more)

The parents of the boy who drowned last month at the Wenatchee High School pool have filed a wrongful death claim against the School District. Juan and Filomena Reyes and their attorney met with reporters earlier today at a news conference after filing the tort claim with the District. They shared their story of the fateful day when they were notified that there had been an accident. it wasn’t until Mrs. Reyes arrived at Central Washington Hospital that she learned that her son, Antonio, was dead and had been transferred to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center where she and her husband finally saw the body. Reyes described her son as a good boy who liked school. He was also described as athletic. He played soccer but according to the family’s attorney, Sim Osborne, he didn’t know how to swim. He further alleged that the School District was aware that Reyes couldn't swim. Osborne has filed a 15 million dollar claim against the School District. The School District has 60 days to respond to the claim before the Reyes can file a formal lawsuit with the court. In a subsequent news release District Superintendant, Brian Flones declined to comment on the claim. He did say that the District extends its condolences to the Reyes and that an drowning investigation continues.
