The State Department of Ecology has extended bans on all outdoor burning and the unnecessary use of fireplaces and uncertified woodstoves in five Eastern Washington Counties. DOE spokesman Seth Preston says the bans will continue on non-tribal land in Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, Ferry and Stevens counties through at least Monday afternoon. A ban in Walla Walla County starts tomorrow (fri) morning at ten. Preston says smoke from burning wood to heat homes can cause serious health problems, including lung and heart diseases. Cold, still air traps smoke close to the ground where people can easily breath it.
