01/12/12 Delayed Retirement

SEATTLE (AP) - More Americans are putting their retirement on hold.

Roughly one in seven Washington residents age 65 or older are still employed.

The economy is just one of the factors keeping people in the office instead of on the golf course.

The Seattle Times reports there are a lot of factors that make people want to work longer and also some that make retirement a far off dream for some.

The percentage of senior citizens working has nearly doubled in U.S. in the past two decades. The trend is expected to accelerate as more baby boomers approach retirement age.

Workers 55 and older accounted for less than 10 percent of Washington's workforce in 1990, but made up more than 20 percent by the end of 2010.
