Ice fishing or just a stroll across an icy body of water serves as a fun pastime for some during the winter but what if the ground your walking on gives way?
Bill Larson of the security division of the Chelan PUD says ice is thinner near the shore than near the middle any body of water, ice four inches thick is safe to walk on, six inches or thicker is safe to drive an ATV or snomobile onto and always walk on smooth clear ice.
In a worst case scenario Larson provides the answers on what to do if you fall through, "don't panic," says Larson, "don't take off your clothes, they keep you insulated and buoyant." "Keep your hands flat on the ice, if you do fall through pull yourself onto the ice and roll off the hole," Larson said.
Larson said its essential to cross ice with proper gear such as a life jacket...shoes or boots with good traction and a throw rope.
