01/30/12 Relief Aid Available To Farmers

Farmers in Chelan and Douglas counties can now seek disaster relief for 2010 crops damaged by inclement weather.

Farm Service Agency Executive Director Michelle Ruud talks about the qualifications for relief funding, "in order to be eligible, a crop would have to have suffured 10% or greater production loss," said Rudd, "growers would have to have federal insurance or NAP and that goes for all counties in all states."

Also known as "S-U-R-E"... Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments provides payments and insurance while the Non-insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program or N-A-P... insures crops when federal crop coverage is unavailable.

Ruud says the biggest difference between each program is that SURE guarantees revenue instead of solely paying for production loses.

Ruud expects less funding for natural disaster related loss in 2010 than in 2009 but says it will be interesting to see what the programs yield in 2011 because of the late fruit harvest.

For more information on the programs visit disaster.fsa.usda.gov or contact the Chelan Count yFS at 66-9390 or the Douglas County FSA at 745-8561.
