02/03/12 PFD Legislation

Legislation is moving forward in the both the State House and Senate that could provide a financial fix to the Town Toyota Center default.  A bill that House Representative Mike Armstrong has sponsored would allow each of the nine PFD entities to vote independantly on a sales tax increase.  Armstrong says the measure was drafted in response to a request from Douglas County who, along with some other PFD jurisdictions, oppose a district-wide vote on a .2 percent sales tax increase.  Armstrong's bill passed out of the House Ways and Means Committee this week and is now headed to the full house.

It was also learned on Friday's KPQ Legislative Hotline program that a Senate Bill which failed to make it out of Committee during the December special session is being revised to reflect changes being sought by the PFD. Senator Linda Evans-Parlette says that measure is being sponsored by Senate Ways and Means Committee Chairman, Ed Murray of Seattle.

Senator Parlette acknowledged that the legislature must act quickly so that the arena owners can go to the voters with a proposal in the spring. She says there's a good chance it will pass out of the legislature and get the Governor's approval by the end this month.
