08/12/12 Climbing Accident

Two climbers are in the hospital following a fall in the Tumwater Canyon area Friday. Chelan County Sheriff's Deputies report that siblings Kurt and Andrea Haisch were climbing near milepost 98 near Leavenworth when Kurt pulled a large boulder loose while climbing causing him to fall 15 feet. Deputies say the boulder fell on top of Kurt's sister who was belaying him at the time.  Both were seriously injured.  Having been pinned underneath the rock Leavenworth emergency crews used a hydraulic tool to lift the boulder off Andrea's leg.  Both were rushed to Central Washington Hospital for initial treatment and were later transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.  According to hospital officials . . .Andrea is in serious condition and Kurt is in satisfactory condition.
