09/01/12 New Wildfires

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - Firefighters in central Washington have their hands full as two new wildfires near Yakima have burned across more than a square mile each.

One wind-driven blaze started Friday evening at a home and orchard on the Ahtanum Ridge and burned south. The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that about 700 acres on the north and south sides of the ridge have burned. Incident commander Christy Boisselle says no injuries are reported but about 10 homes were threatened.

Some 75 firefighters responded. Smoke from the fire rose hundreds of feet into the air.

A fast-moving brush fire that started northwest of nearby Selah on Friday afternoon burned across 960 acres but was contained by Friday night. There were no reports of injuries of major damage. Don Charles manages the Stagecoach RV Park. He says the park was evacuated.
