(AP) - The Washington Transportation Department says 67,000 vehicles a day used the stretch of Interstate 5 through Mount Vernon that is now blocked by the collapse of the Skagit River bridge. Mount Vernon is about 60 miles north of Seattle and 40 miles south of the Canada Border. The roadblock on both directions of I-5 is expected to cause a major disruption in trade and tourism between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia. The Transportation Department has set up detours. The closest is within sight of the I-5 bridge and mostly used for local traffic between Mount Vernon and Burlington. The department also is recommending detours using Highway 20 and Highway 9 that add tens of miles to a trip. Officials are urging drivers to avoid the area if possible. .. ...

SEATTLE (AP) - The rainy season has not yet returned to Seattle and the city is on the verge of a record dry stretch.

The National Weather Service says a high pressure system over the Northwest is blocking Pacific frontal systems that typically keep Western Washington wet from the fall through the spring.

Since July 23, Sea-Tac Airport has recorded only .03 of rain. With no rain in the forecast, the city will set a record of 76 days for the driest stretch since they started keeping records in 1891. The previous record was a 75-day stretch of .03 or less, set in 1922.

Forecasters say the next best chance of rain may be Thursday night or next Friday. Until then, the forecast calls for clear skies and high temperatures in the 60s.
