9am Friday with updates and corrections to previous version

A flat bed truck hauling apples crashed into the Columbia River off US2 about 10 miles North of East Wenatchee just after 1pm Thursday afternoon. Trooper Bryan Moore reports the driver, Kyle R. Stanton, 40 of Wenatchee escaped uninjured. An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported Stanton was transported to the hospital.  The truck was completely submerged and apple were floating down river towards Rocky Reach Dam.  An estimated 100 gallons of fuel was spilled and Chelan County PUD responded with a barge and placed a floating boom to contain the fuel and apples.  Dept of Ecology was also responding to the scene.

Trooper Moore says the WSDOT, State Patrol, Department of Ecology and other emergency responders were on scene until about midnight. Trooper Moore said a crew from Randy's Towing had removed the truck from the river by approximately 10:45pm Thursday.   Moore said an effort to retrieve apples captured in the Chelan PUD collection boom will be conducted sometime today.

The cause is under investigation but it appears the truck's wheels may have lost traction in the slush on the shoulder of the road.  Moore says about 100 feet of guardrail was destroyed and the truck rolled over down the river bank into the  Columbia.
