A fatality collision at around 1:45 Wednesday afternoon at the Big Y junction closed Highway 2 in both directions for roughly 2 1/2 hours.

Trooper John Bryant said the near head-on collision occurred between a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser and a 2016 GMC Sierra. The Chrysler, driven by 81-year-old Leavenworth native Charles Lemons, was named the causing vehicle, as it traveled across the center line into the oncoming lane.

Bryant said, "If you were going [westbound] towards Leavenworth and you didn't want to take that exit to get you onto US 97, it occurred right just past that exit. Where the lane goes from double lanes down to single lanes."

Lemons was pronounced dead at the scene. His female passanger was transported to Central Washington Hospital. The driver and passenger in the GMC were treated at the scene.

The reason Lemons crossed into the oncoming lane is under investigation.
