The Cascadia Conservation District and Washington Department of Natural Resources is offering its annual free chipping program for spring 2021. Registration is open until April 15.

"The goal of the program is to work with land owners who want to do some spring clean up, but really to create better defensible space to prepare for wildfire season," said Patrick Haggerty, forestry program manager.

The program offers folks recommendations on how to improve the space around their home to prepare for fire season. Home owners can then do that work, like removing trees and cutting brush, and pile up the materials they generate.

"We hire a contractor crew to head around the county to chip up all that material," said Haggerty.
