Central Washington University Police announced Thursday that they arrested and individual they believe is the suspect in a possible hate crime on campus the day before.

The university alerted the community Wednesday that a student stole the rainbow pride flag displayed at its Diversity Center and set it on fire while filming the incident on social media. Campus police credit the community for all the tips it received prior to apprehending the suspect.

In a statement, CWU officials called the incident an "act of hate" that "diminished all of us."

June is formally recognized as Pride Month both in Washington State and federally.

The statement released by CWU officials is below.
