City of Chelan has hired external company, SCJ Alliance, to implement the wayfinding objective on the Chelan Downtown Master Plan. This is an objective meant to create more effective signage through the city. The overarching goal of the wayfinding program is to focus on directional signage such as those signs pointing folks in the direction of amenities and attractions. The goal is also striving to have a consistent image throughout the city.

There will be two opportunities for Chelan residents to participate hands on in the process, the first one being on September 19th at the farmer's market at the booth SCJ will set up. The first day of participation is really focused on orientation of the process and educating folks on the ins and outs of the wayfinding program.

"The farmer's market will really be where folks can interact with us as long or short as they want to. They'll be some activities where they can draw out some signs, they can pick up a packet and drop it off at city hall a week later," said Rachel Granrath, SCJ senior planner. "It'll be a really good opportunity, we'll have a booth there where folks can speak with us directly. We're here to really listen and learn."

The following day, September 20th, will be more of a deeper plunge into the topic. This exercise of the process will be from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the picnic shelter in Riverwalk Park.

"Folks can come in and give design priorities, sketch ideas and then we'll really dive into the sign mapping," said Granath.

A goal of the wayfinding process is to integrate creativity and elements that identify Chelan's heritage and natural surroundings into the design process for the signage.
