Chelan County Commissioners predictably moved the county's Fire Hazard Level from 'Moderate' to 'High' Monday.

"It's dried out quite a bit in the valley zone." said Fire Marshall Bob Plumb, "Down by the river we've had a number of fires. Even with the little bit of rain we got yesterday (Sunday), it's going to dry right back out today. The cheatgrass is dry."

There are four Fire Hazard Levels: moderate, high, very high, and extreme.

With the change to a 'High' Fire Hazard level, fires are no longer allowed at dispersed camping sights. Open burning was closed when the county entered the 'Moderate' distinction June 1st.

"Last year we never went above high. If the weather forecasts continue as predicted I would guess that we will probably go to 'Very High' at a minimum. I'm hoping not until the end of July, or early August," Plumb continued.

Plumb is also reminding residents that fireworks are prohibited throughout Chelan County.
