With winter weather, potential power outages are a possibility. Chelan PUD released some helpful tips for Chelan county residents that rely on a portable generator in outages in an effort to keep both residents and Chelan PUD line crews safe.

"We know that folks, particularly those that live in some of the remote areas, do have portable generators and they're really an important tool," said Kimberlee Craig, Chelan PUD spokeswoman. "They can keep food in the freezer frozen, refrigerators going to fans and furnaces. But it's really important to use those safely."

The first step in safely using a generator is selecting the right fit for the needs it'll be used for. This can be determined based on the wattage of the appliances that would be kept running with the generator and make sure the generator can support each of them. Also, Craig reminds folks to use heavy duty extension cords that can be used for outdoor use and the amount of amps that will be traveling through it.

"Really important, is when you plan to use a generator, you operate in a safe and well ventilated place at least 10 feet from any doors or windows or vents that might pull those dangerous carbon monoxide fumes inside the house," said Craig.

Another key reminder, always plug the appliance into the generator. Never plug the generator into an electrical outlet in the home or the electrical panel, unless one has had a professionally installed switch which is a transfer switch.

"Without that (the transfer switch), the generator could backfeed through the meter into the neighborhood. That could really be a severe safety hazard for your neighbors and Chelan PUD crews who are working to get the power back on," said Craig.

Stay warm and stay safe.
