If you get your Christmas trees in the National Forest, those permits will go on sale Sunday with three options for purchase.

Okanogan-Wenatchee Public Affairs Officer Robin DeMario says you can buy them online at Recreation.gov or at a National Forest office or local vendor.

"If you do purchase your permit online, then print it off and carry it with you in your vehicle. When you get to your destination to go cut your tree, leave it on the dash of your car."

There are two permits allowed per family.

4th graders can get a free one through the Every Kid Outdoors program.

"It encourages them through the free permits that they get, the access to the trailheads and this Christmas tree program, to get outdoors with their family. To develop a love for nature, the woods, the forests and the grasslands."

Permits are $5 each outside of that program.

High clearance 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended for driving on national forest roads during the winter months.

Remember to leave early in the day to allow for maximum daylight.

Also, be prepared for all types of weather.
