Congressional Western Caucus members - led by Chairman Dan Newhouse, Bruce Westerman, and Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy - called for action in response to the historic drought crisis in the West. A letter was penned to the Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

"The [Biden] administration put together an effort earlier this year to address the potential drought we could experience," said Congressman Newhouse. "Other than organizing, have done nothing and still have done nothing to address what truly is happening in the West."

According to Newhouse, the hope is for response in the form of disaster relief, making water transfers easier and making funding available to make necessary emergency actions to get water to people.

"In the long term, making sure we have the increased storage and conveyance capacity to avoid these situations in the future," said Newhouse. "What we're trying to do is force action on their part because what people need is relief now."
