Central Washington University saw an almost 20% increase in fall quarter Running Start enrollment with 448 students from 38 high schools across the state.

"For the (other high) schools, the people not in the Ellensburg area or the Sammamish area, I think it was people thinking outside of the box about where they could do Running Start since there are more options since everything is online," said Angelia Riveira, Running Start associate director.

CWU has been offering Running Start since 1994. The program allows 11th- and 12th-graders to take college courses. Running Start reduces the time it takes a student to complete a degree.

"There was a lot of people going, 'if I'm doing online school, I might as well do Running Start'," said Riveira.
