Douglas County Fire District No. 2 has reached a milestone for the future fire station, Station 4, on 35th Street in East Wenatchee. The new station has been in the works for almost five years and last Monday, the district broke ground for the 13,000 square foot facility.

"It goes back to 2015, 2014 when we started planning for our levy," said Chief Dave Baker. "Now we are actually seeing the fruit of our labor coming with the breaking of the ground."

Citizens approved a levy lid lift in 2016 which in turn funded three priorities targeted by the district. The priorities - staffing, facilities, equipment and a healthy reserve - have been maintained, according to Chief Baker.

"We ordered two brand new fire trucks," said Chief Baker. One fire truck is a replacement and the other will be an addition to Station 4. "We've also got being constructed right now a ladder truck...it reaches 100 feet in the air."

Other new additions for Station 4 include a rescue vehicle and a brush truck.

"It's a large fire station with a secondary building right next to it that will house a training room and additional offices. The station will have 12 bedrooms for our firefighters in the resident program," said Chief Baker.

The groundbreaking ceremony was virtual to abide by safety measures for COVID, so in June 2021, the district will have a grand opening.
