Campers, nature enthusiasts, and stargazers have a new opportunity for overnight lodging with the Steliko Lookout on the Entiat Ranger District. Starting November 7, the lookout is available for rent.

"The lookouts are part of National Forest history,"said Jon Meier, Entiat District Recreation Natural Resource Specialist. "They were used for a long time to spot forest fires. They were actually one of the first jobs all the women did in the forest service.

With Washington state grant money, the historic lookout underwent a remodel for future occupants. New vinyl windows, replaced flooring and a kitchen update are just some of the upgrades conducted inside the lookout originally built in 1947.

"We replaced the siding and insulated it..we installed a heater, a bench area with a two burner stove in it so people can heat water, maybe cook something small," said Meier. "We also installed a outhouse about 150 feet away from the lookout."

To rent the lookout, a donation of $50 per night is required and donations will directly funnel into the maintenance and upkeep of the lookout. The lookout occupancy limit is four people and no pets. To set up a reservation, contact the Entiat Ranger Station 784-4700.

"This lookout's only 12 miles or so from Entiat, it's a fairly easy drive, it's accessible year round and it's in a beautiful spot," said Meier.

Despite being open year round, in order to access the lookout during the winter and spring; folks will need to walk, cross country ski, snowmobile or snowshoe the 1.6 miles since the gate to the lookout will be closed. During the summer and fall, the lookout is accessible with high clearance vehicles, such as an SUV or 4-wheel drive.
