A two vehicle accident around 2:30 pm Monday afternoon on I-90 in Moses Lake claimed the lives of both drivers.

Trooper John Bryant said the incident occurred in the eastbound lane near the junction of SR 17. 87-year-old Emanuel G Schaible of Moses Lake was driving a Hyundai Santa Fe in the wrong direction of the Interstate when he collided head-on with a Chevy Express van, driven by 59-year-old Robert Miller of Auburn.

"Don't know why the car was going the wrong way, or what the driver was trying to do." Bryant said, "Maybe the driver was trying to get off of the road, or there was impairment. We don't know any of that yet."

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident shut down a portion of eastbound I-90 for about four hours. Detours were established with the help of the Department of Transportation and the Grant County Sheriff's Office.

The investigation is ongoing.
