Governor Inslee signed legislation sponsored by 12th District Senator Brad Hawkins Monday that establishes an eight-year pilot project for the reduction of sales tax on purchases of hydrogen vehicles.

The East Wenatchee Republican says he worked with many people to get the legislation passed.

"I'm super excited that the hydrogen vehicles bill was signed into law. It's had a long journey through five different committees, but it's definitely generated a great deal of conversation throughout the process. Hydrogen, as an issue, has gained a lot of support."

A 2019 bill that was signed by the Governor authorizes public utility districts to produce and sell “renewable hydrogen.”

The 12th district Republican says there were several bi-partisan co-sponsors of the legislation that promotes fairness.

"Passing any bill is difficult, but in the end my colleagues understood the importance of the state being technology neutral towards tax policy for zero-emission vehicles. We're still so new in the process for these vehicles. It's important to not favor one technology over another."

Hawkins believes North Central Washington could be in a position to lead the country when it comes to hydrogen fuel production and use in vehicles.
