Grant PUD discussed tools and strategies to minimize power interruptions and strengthen system reliability at Tuesday's commission meeting. Drones were listed as an option for assistance with patrolling power lines and substation inspections.

"System reliability is something we focus on a great deal here at Grant PUD," said Ryan Holterhoff, public affairs officer. "One of the things we do is patrol lines."

The drones have an infrared cameras as a feature and these cameras can detect heat and identify areas that signal 'electricity leakage'.

"When this is implemented, we see it being something that will help us identify and see areas that show signs of a potential outage," said Holterhoff.

The drones will also help reduce inspection time which is beneficial for a utility that has a wide coverage.
