Kittitas County Sheriff Gene Dana announced his retirement Thursday, effective at the end of October.

Sheriff Dana has been in law enforcement for 46 years, starting in the Washington State Patrol in 1974 as a trooper in King County.

He was first elected as Kittitas County Sheriff in 1999 and has been re-elected five times since.

In a statement posted to the agency's Facebook, Dana said, "Now that this year’s fire season is over, and we have passed Proposition #1 forever, it is time for me to move on to my next adventure." He says work full-time at home for his wife and be a special consultant to his grandchildren.
