A 50-year-old man is dead after drowning Tuesday afternoon in the Wenatchee River.

Adam Musgrove with the Chelan County Sheriff's Office says the man hit some rapids while tubing near the KOA camp grounds in Leavenworth.

"His tube had slipped backwards where he sustained a head injury, and then went into the water face down," said Musgrove. "Some bystanders and family were able to pull him out of the water and attempt to do CPR on him, but unfortunately he had succumbed to his injuries and drowned."

Musgrove says head injuries are a contributing factor to drowning's on the Wenatchee River because of fast moving water and unassuming currents.

"This victim also had his life jacket on but still sustained a head injury, which most likely knocked him out," Musgrove said. "If you go face down in that, you can imagine if you're not prepared for that type of thing, those rocks can be deadly."

It's the fourth drowning this year in Chelan County, which averages between three and five drownings a year.

Musgrove says the Wenatchee River between Leavenworth and Monitor is deceivingly dangerous because of its rapids and cold water from the winter snow runoff.

"This (drowning) is a tragic reminder to wear a life vest, and helmet if you are going into the rapids, said Musgrove. "Know your limitations and always go with a partner."
