The Moses Lake School District is starting the process of renaming the mascots for three of its schools.

It's required to make the changes after the Colville Tribes approved a resolution calling for close by school districts to drop the use of Native American names and mascots.

The state Legislature also approved a bill in 2021 prohibiting Native American names, mascots and images.

The district is taking public suggestions for new mascot names through Sunday for the Moses Lake High School Chiefs, the Chief Moses Middle School Braves and the Frontier Middle School Warriors.

Submission forms are available on the Moses Lake School District website.

Submissions are due by 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The district is asking the public to submit mascot names that have local significance.
