The Moses Lake School District will have to change mascots for its high school and two middle schools.

The requirement comes after the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation approved a resolution calling for close by school districts to drop the use of Native American names and mascots.  

The district has announced its started the rebranding process for the Moses Lake High School Chiefs, the Chief Moses Middle School Braves and the Frontier Middle School Warriors.

The school district met with the Colville Tribe after the state Legislature approved a bill in 2021 prohibiting Native American names, mascots and images.

The district says its asking residents to use the opportunity to united the community, even though the changes may be unexpected and emotional.

It's now accepting applications to join a Mascot Committee.
