4th District Representative Dan Newhouse gave his account of what he called a very surreal moment when the U.S. Capitol came under attack from rioters Wednesday.

Newhouse said he was on the floor of the House for the certification of the Electoral College ballots when the violence erupted.

"That's what we were in the midst of when I got an email telling me that the Cannon (House) Office Building, where my office now is located, was being evacuated. My first thought was (getting to) my staff and my wife, who happened to be in the office yesterday as well, and being together with them."

Newhouse eventually found his wife and others in a separate office building and locked down with them for several hours at that location. Lawmakers were eventually able to reconvene and complete the certification process around 4:00 a.m.

Newhouse added that one positive was that the continuity of government was maintained, but "we are all still processing and trying to figure out where to go from here."
