Representative Dan Newhouse joined fellow Washington Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers in reintroducing the Hydropower Clean Energy Future Act last week.

Newhouse said the main reason for the bill is to help the rest of the country understand that hydropower is an essential part of a clean energy portfolio.

"We are living proof the benefits and also of much of the progress in research and development in improving hydroelectric dams and allowing them to coexist in our environment," explained Newhouse.

The legislation aims to expand hydropower production, modernize the licensing process, reduce market barriers, and promote the next generation of hydropower. The full bill can be found here.

According to the Department of Energy the U.S. could grow hydro production by 50% by 2050, achieving a savings of $209 billion from avoided greenhouse gas emissions.
