Congressman Dan Newhouse recently joined fellow representative Mike Levin of California in introducing a resolution to the House of Representatives recognizing and celebrating Wednesday's 70th anniversary of Impact Aid.

The aid helps assist school districts impacted by the presence of federally-owned land nearby that would otherwise be generating tax receipts.

Newhouse said, "Without this assistance, these school districts would find it almost impossible to be able to provide the quality education that is asked of them by their communities, and is required."

Nearly 880,000 children of military personnel, children residing on tribal lands, children in law-rent public housing, and children of civilians working or living on federal land benefit from Impact Aid.

Newhouse added that almost every county in his district has a situation where a school district is eligible.

The Impact Aid program was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1950. The program is the oldest K-12 federal education program.
